Home is where the heart is

Holidays are all about spending time with family, whether we’re staying in our own homes or visiting others. For some people though, it’s a time to get away on a winter break which means leaving their homes unoccupied. Either way here are the ways we recommend protecting yourselves and your home during the festive period;

1. Frost can cause burst pipes risking water damage. In fact, escape of water was the biggest cause of domestic property claims in the UK last year (Association of British Insurers Key Facts 2014). If you’re going away we recommend you turn your water off to minimize the potential damage in your property. If you’re staying at home, familiarize yourself with the location of your stopcock in case of emergencies. It’s also worth lagging pipes in your loft and checking your water tank is insulated. Consider lagging outside taps to prevent them from freezing.

2. If you’re planning to go away, it’s worth asking a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your house while it’s empty.  Ask them to move your post as well as opening and closing your curtains or blinds.

3. Avoid advertising your absence on social media. It’s easy to get excited about going away but if you don’t have high security settings, you don’t know who might see those messages.

4. Make sure your alarm systems and lighting are all working before you go.

5. Whether you’re at home or not, keep Christmas presents and other valuables out of sight. Thieves know that we have more possessions in our homes at this time of year, so keeping gifts and valuables in discreet places is essential.

6. As well as the threat of theft, your home is subject to a battering from winter weather conditions. Making sure your home is well maintained and in good working order before any severe weather hits will help you keep warm and dry. Clear out any guttering and drains, check your roof including sheds, garages and outbuildings, and consider pruning any low hanging branches from nearby trees.

Locking and leaving your practice

With the Christmas bank holidays landing on a Thursday and Friday this year, you could be shutting up shop for at least four days in a row.

Before you do, we recommend taking the following steps so you don’t face any nasty surprises when you come back to work;

7.  Turn off your water

Escape of water is the most expensive cause of claims for healthcare practices in the UK (Lloyd & Whyte records 2014). This type of damage is caused by burst pipes, which can happen in frosty weather.

Turning the water off in your practice, either via a water shut-off device or via the stopcock, is the easiest way for you to lessen the risk of damage to your practice. Turning your water off limits the amount of water in the system, therefore reducing the amount of damage that can be caused.

8.  Secure valuables and make bank deposits

While the majority of your customers might pay by card, you’re likely to keep some cash on your premises. Make sure any money is deposited safely or locked in your safe.

9.  Locking up inside and out

If you have any internal doors that can be locked, do it. It could protect your equipment and drug supplies should an intruder be able to get into your premises. Also, check all of your windows and any entry points of the building.

10.  Check your alarms and security lights

As with your home, keeping your security systems maintained will help deter theft. If you’re in any doubt about how well your alarms are working, call out an engineer.

11.  General maintenance

Similarly check the condition of your roof, guttering and drains especially if lots of wind and rain is forecast. It’s also worth removing any rubbish outside your practice which can be used by a criminal to break in. Any damage or loss to your home or practice can be a costly coal in your stocking. Ease yourself into the New Year by taking simple precautions to protect yourself and your properties.
